Dirty Dancing Banned in the O.C.

By LAURA COVERSON

Watch Video

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 16, 2006 — A popular high school principal in the wealthy enclave of Aliso Viejo — in California's so-called "O.C." (Orange County) — has put his foot down on "dirty dancing."

Charles Salter has banned all dances until the kids clean up their act, and now parents and schools from California to Connecticut are cheering.

What moved the head of Aliso Niguel High School to make such a drastic move?

"Freak dancing" or "freakin'," an intimate hip-hop dance style between a boy and a girl, or two girls.

"It's basically when two people are like grinding against each other in a kind of sexual way," Aliso Niguel freshman Kori Roberts says.

The 14-year-old attended the "Jungle Dance" this fall that proved to be the last straw for Salter.

"I saw a girl, she was about 14 or 15 years old," Salter says. "She was bent over, dancing with a young man who must have been a junior and he was gyrating and thrusting on top of her."

The principal had been monitoring school dances for several years and had expressed his concerns to parents about the sexual nature of the dancing. There were dance chaperones and lots of conversation about what was allowed and forbidden.

But even at the school's Winter Formal last January it was impossible to keep the atmosphere below fever pitch inside the dark cavernous hall, pulsating with strobe lights and about 1,200 teenagers.

All across the floor girls thrust their rears into their partner's pelvis to the beat of Missy Elliot's "Let Me Work It."

Young couples were grinding away like gears to the pulse of Sisqo's "How Many Licks."

But in September, an exasperated Salter pulled the switch on the back-to-school dance with its jungle theme.

"I closed the dance down early," Salter says. " I came into my office, it must have been about midnight, and I knew I had to address this."

In the wee hours of the morning, Salter fired off an e-mail to parents and teachers:

"Why do our girls have to have themselves so exposed? Why do they have to have cleavage displayed so overtly and slits high up their thighs and then allow boys to dance right up against them? … I am not going to allow this to continue to happen. If there is going to be another dance, then you as parents and your children will have to sit down with me to make some huge changes because I cannot and will not have what my staff and I had to deal with today."

Reasons For Getting Irrelevant Or Off-targeted Google Adsense Ads And How To Stop Them

If you are a Google Adsense publisher you must have came across with the problem of getting irrelevant or off-targeted ads on your sites. What are the reasons for getting irrelevant ads? How can you stop them from appearing on your sites? Read On and you will find these questions answered.

Reasons for getting irrelevant Ads:
*Lack of content
You all Know that google adsense ads are contextual.Hence keyword rich content is a must to get well targeted ads.If your site has less content that can be one of the reasons why you are getting off-targeted ads and/or PSAs.

*Sensitive Keywords
Sometimes webmaster have to compromise on including keywords which are not related to your niche in their site's content. If these sensitive keywords happens to fall under the category of high paying ones you will see ads related to them on your site instead of getting ads related to the topic of your site. Some webmasters would think that they will benefit from these ads since they have a higher EPC but this is not the case,Since these ads are irrelevant to your site's content your visitors will not be interested in clicking on them.

*Poor advertising strategies by advertisers
This is something which not under the control of the publishers. It is found that some advertisers uses generic keywords to bid upon in their advertising campaigns instead of using specific keywords. This results in serving off-targeted ads to a publisher's site. This is neither going to help the advertiser since it will reduce the sales and their ROI.

*Geo-targeting
Geo-targeting in the google adsense is another reason why we sometimes gets off-targeted ads. Some Geo-targeted ads doesn't consider about the site's topic and considers only about the geographic location from where the visitor is.

*Comment spamming
This can be another reason for getting off-targeted ads. This happens mainly in blogs.sometimes adsense media bot picks up the sensitive keywords that may be there in the spam comments and serves ads which are related to them and thereby resulting in irrelevant ads for the site.

Possible solutions for Off-targeted ads:
*Keyword rich content.
Each system will have its on methods of getting ads relevant. In google adsense it is more dependent on what you write about than anything else. So having more content with keywords related to your sites niche can help you in getting more relevant ads.
Content without keywords or with sensitive keywords won't help you.

*Use of section targeting
You can use Section targeting to emphasise those part of your content to which your ads to be related. You can read about section targeting here
Make sure to have significant amount of content between your section targeting tags else you will end up with irrelevant ads again. Also note that section targeting can take up to 2 weeks to take effect.
Also be warned about using this feature to emphasise irrelevant content as it might go against the google adsense program policies.

*Section targeting with "weight ignore"
You can use this to mask the your content with sensitive keywords from adsense media bot.Locate the part of your content with sensitive keywords and enclose it between section targeting with weight ignore tags.

*Make sure that your site's topic is reflected more from your page titles, headers, meta tags,Image ALT parameter and from your content instead of from graphics and images that appear on your sites.

*Use your keywords in your page titles, headers and the words near to where the ads are going to appear.

*Don't use generic names as your page file names.
For example,if your page is about "Making money with adsense" you can name the file as "making-money-with-adsense.html" or something like that.

*Use Competitive ad filter
You can always use competitive ad filter to block unwanted ads from appearing on your sites.Make sure to use it in a wise manner because a deliberate filtering can affect your EPC.

If you are an adsense publisher it will be worth taking a look at List of Common Adsense Mistakes this.

10 Great Things Not To Do With Google Adsense

There is no question that you can make some good money with Google Adsense, but you’re setting yourself up for disaster if you make any of these Top 10 mistakes!

1. Do not use fake information when opening your Google Adsense account.

Google says that’s a no-no and they will cut your account off and keep all the money you may have earned. Besides, trying to hide your true identity can cause serious problems with the I.R.S. or whoever your tax authority is.

2. Do not hack or modify Google AdSense code other than to change the parameters that Google authorizes you to change.

Any attempt to bypass Google’s built-in algorithms not only poses a danger to the integrity of the network, but it threatens the financial modle that Google operates under. You’re not dealing with some Mom-and-Pop company here, and Google has the legal muscle and deep enough pockets to drag you through every court in the land if you damage their business with your hacking antics.

3. Keep AdSense ads off of your registration, confirmation, and all "thank you" pages.

Don’t ask me why you can’t put your ads there. It makes sense to me that those would be wonderful locations. Google thinks otherwise, however, and doing so is a hanging offense according to their Terms of Service.

4. Do not display AdSense ads and a competitor's ads (like Overture's) on the same page at the same time.

That just makes plain good sense. Google doesn’t demand 100% SITE loyalty from you, but they do insist that their own ads not be cluttered up by offerings from their competitors.

5. Don't "beg for clicks" or provide any incentive for clicking on your Google AdSense ads.

This is a biggie and you see this rule violated all the time. Any of the “get paid to do stuff” sites that put Google ads in the member’s control panels are walking the plank and they don’t even realize it. Even those sites with the polite little messages asking you to “help keep my site running by clicking on our sponsor’s ads” are asking to be cut off if those happen to be Google ads.

6. Never click on the ads running on your own site, even if you are genuinely interested in the product or service and are thinking of buying it!

Nothing screams FRAUD louder than a webmaster running up his or her own click counts by happily clicking on ads fromtheir own site. The Google Gods can track this activity and it won’t be long until you find yourself getting a goodbye note from their fraud team.

7. No misleading labeling

Google is very specific about what text can be placed around their ads. Their Terms of Service state: “Publishers may not label the ads with text other than ‘sponsored links’ or ‘advertisements.’ This includes any text directly above our ads that could be confused with, or attempt to be associated with Google ads.”

This is to keep visitors from becoming confused and barking up Google’s tree when they clicked on an ad that led to a porn site instead of the recipe site they were expecting to visit.

8. Avoid keyword spamming and other divisive tricks

You may be tempted to buy one of those “generates thousands of key-word rich pages in seconds” programs that are so popular these days but I’ll tell you this: Their days are numbered. Google is wise to such shenanigans and they will be hot on your trail. Other prohibited gimmicks include:

• ”Sneaky” page redirects that send a visitor off to a different site then they were expecting to visit.

• Multiple sites, domains, pages, etc. which have substantially duplicate content.

• Hidden text or links of any type.

• Excessive outbound links on any page. Google recommends no more than 100. I’d keep it way below that.

• And here is a nugget of wisdom straight from Google’s mouth: “Do not participate in link schemes designed to increase your site's ranking or PageRank. In particular, avoid links to web spammers or "bad neighborhoods" on the web as your website may be affected adversely by those links.

9. Don’t advertise anything on Google’s prohibited items list.

It’s a lot shorter lists than PayPal’s or eBay’s, but it includes a lot of the same stuff like hacking/cracking content, porn, illegal drugs, gambling sites, beer or hard alcohol (I guess wine is OK), weapons, and the other usual stuff.

10. And the 10th dumbest thing NOT to do with Google Adsense is to let the other nine things stop you from running an honest site that’s designed to make the most out of this very profitable opportunity that Google offers!

Google AdSense Tips

Google Adsense allows website publishers to display contextually relevant advertisements on their website. If a web visitor "clicks" on an advertisement, the web publisher will earn a percentage of the advertising revenue generated as a result of the click. Many webmasters have built content websites around the Google Adsense model. In many cases the specific intent of the webmaster is to profit from Google Adsense Other webmasters use Google Adsense to supplement their revenue. Regardless of the webmaster's intent, the following tips will help webmasters looking to profit from Adsense

Top Google Adsense Tips:

1. Niche Sites.
Targeted niche sites that have a clear theme, tend to generate more advertising revenue simply because it is easier to achieve decent search engine placement. Be warned though, you want to chose a niche where there is a sufficient number of advertisements available.

2. Target Keywords.
When determining the sites focus, consider how much the advertisers pay for the advertisements. If the site is focused on ringtones, like Ringtone Central http://www.ringtones-central.com the payout per click is going to be very small, as ringtones are not high ticket items, advertisers will not spend a lot on pay per click advertisements. With less obvious markets use Overture to determine how much advertisers pay per keyword, it is usually similar on Google. Search Overture for a keyword then click "View Advertisers' Max Bids" in the top right corner. This will show the Overture inventory and how much is paid per keyword. Because the market has become very competitive, it will be difficult to rank well in search engines with a new website that is optimized for the terms that have the highest payout. Consider targeting terms that are moderately priced.

3. Aged Sites / Time.
Over time as a website is spidered by Google, advertisements will generally increase in relevance. In general, older websites will rank better in search engines. The closer the advertisements relate to the webpage's content; the higher the "click-through" the publishers will see.

4. Coding.
In order to minimize a websites maintenance place the Google generated AdSense code in the website template or an include file. This will allow you to easily experiment with different advertisement sizes and ad placement, and keep the web maintenance to a minimum.

5. Tracking Channels.
In order to know how effective a specific website or ad placement is use distinct channels and subchannels within Google. This will allow you to discern what performs best on a specific website. Using channels will tell you what sites are making money, what advertisements are making money and what ad position is the most profitable on a specific website. Keep in mind that you should run an advertisement for a full week, in order to properly test its effectiveness, different days of the week will vary the web traffic so comparing one week to another will give the most accurate reflection of how effective a campaign performs.

When testing different advertisement sizes, placement or color schemes be sure to leave campaigns in place for one week, different days will often result in web traffic fluctuations. Comparing web traffic, week to week will give a clear indication of what ad formats perform the best.

6. Integrated Ad Placement.
Many webmasters have been successful at integrating advertisements into a website. The easiest way to integrate an advertisement into a website is to remove the advertisement border. This will allow the ads to better blend with the webpage. Google recommends contrasting the link colors with the website colors to increase click-throughs. It is also suggested that webmasters randomize the color of the advertisements, so that frequent users will not naturally "filter" the ads.

Example of integrated ad placement: http://www.golf-clubhouse.net or http://www.security-protection.net

7. Number vs Value of Advertisements.
Up to three advertisements can be listed on each page. This decreases the value of the advertisements served, so publishers should cautiously add advertisement units, as it dilutes ad inventory. In other words you want to serve the most expensive ads at all times.

8. Hot Spots.
Like web copy above the fold holds true with AdSense as well. This means that advertisements that appear without having to scroll will be read more frequently. Hot Spots are areas on a web page that result in a higher percentage of click-throughs. According to Google the highest paying advertisements are located on the hot spots.

hot spots map - http://www.small-business-software.net/heat-map.htm

Google does not indicate if image advertisements or text ads perform better, so webmasters are encouraged to experiment with both.

9. Highest performing Ad Sizes.
According to Google the 336 x 280 rectangle, the 300 x250 rectangle and the 160 x 600 sky scraper result in the highest number of click-throughs. Depending on the website's design and layout, publishers may experience different results with different ad sizes, placements and color schemes. Expirement and track the results for each website to maximize the AdSense payout.

Make Money With Adsense Writing Articles

Making money with Google Adsense is all the rage now. And there are so many different ways to make money from Google Adsense But no matter what type of website you have, you must be displaying the Google ads, getting traffic and traffic that clicks on your ads to make any money.

So to help you along your way, here is a method you've probably not tried and most people probably won't as it does take effort and time. This will make it easier for you to be successful with it.

You see, most people seem to want to keep switching from automatic software generators to bombs to portal sites to directory listing sites, which is fine, but the best way is to stick to creating unique content that's informative and of high quality.

This method is not the only way to make money with Google Adsense, jeez there are probably hundreds and hundreds and lots that we all have not even thought of yet. But as I said before I really feel that this is the best method for long term success, simply because it's been working well in different ways since I began Internet marketing a while ago.

What you need to do is create a site that has thousands and thousands of pages of content on all sorts of subjects and then you get your traffic for free via organic search engine searches, which is all well and good if you want to wait awhile, but this article is all about making money quickly.

Every page on your site should have an adsense box on it and that is how you will make your money.

Now, trying to write thousands of pages of content yourself before making any money would be difficult, you'd lose interest very very quickly and even if you tried to buy that much content would be lunacy.

Plus to build a publish a website with that much content would alert the search engines who would think you are spamming them.

I've always preferred to make money constantly even if the project is only half done or in progress. I find it gives me incentive to keep going.

So this is how you need to approach it.

1. Register a catchy domain name, something like fiveminuteguides.com or learnitnow.com

2. Start writing little 500 to 750 word action plans or checklist on all sorts of topics such as your favorite hobbies and other interesting topics.

3. Publish your website with your articles and remember to add your Adsense boxes, one in the middle and one of the right hand side.

4. So you've published your site up, you have a page up on a certain topic that had a fairly high search rate and Adsense payout rate, now what? How do you make money with this page.

Write articles! For every one fly fishing type checklist write 10 to 20 articles on all sorts of subjects to do with your topic.

But how do you get people from reading your article to going to your website?

Well, not only would you mention your site within your article, (slip it in humbly) you also have your article byline you can use for that purpose.

For example

"For a complete checklist for your first fly fishing trip visit blah.com"

or

"For a complete step by step checklist for catching large Trout visit blah.com"

So not only will you make money instantly from your website, you will also build tons of quality content over time and you will have hundreds maybe even thousands of articles all over the Internet working for you around the clock and your site will do a heck of a lot better in the search engines due to all the incoming links!

This is a very rough outline, but you smart people out there will be able to run with it and add new ideas I haven’t even thought of. This is one of those money machines that will make you money on demand pretty much for the life of the Internet.

Earn Money with Google Adsense and Wordpress

If you have a business in online marketing using Google Adsense and
affiliate marketing then you should consider using Wordpress as a basis for your site.

Wordpress is a blogging platform that can also be used as a Content Management System (CMS). Getting content online with Wordpress is quick and easy, and managing your content is a breeze.

Wordpress has an administration panel known as 'dashboard' which allows you to write and manage posts and pages in a simple wordprocessor like fashion. Dashboard also allows you to manage categories and all other aspects of your site.

The really great thing about using Wordpress as a basis for your adsense website is how customizable it is. Many thousands of different templates (or 'themes') are freely available to Wordpress users, and many of these include adsense blocks in optimal positions for maximizing your clickthrough rate. This means that creating an adsense website can be as simple as uploading a adsense ready theme to your server. This leaves you with more free time to concentrate on writing quality content for your website!

Some Wordpress themes that include adsense ad units and link units are also Search Engine Optimized (SEO), which means that the pages of your site are constructed in the best way possible for search engine spiders, and also the pages are interlinked in such a way as to ensure the search engines can reach all pages of your site in the correct manner.

Wordpress also 'pings' many services for you through pingomatic each time you create a new post. This alerts the search engines to the fact that you have created new content and tells them to send the search engine spiders out to index your site. RSS feeds and sitemaps can also be generated automatically.

As Wordpress is a blogging platform it has built in functionality to allow visitors to your site to comment on the articles you write. This is great as it encourages user interaction and site 'stickyness'. Another often overlooked advantage to this is that your readers are creating more content on your website each time they leave a comment!

Thousands of 'plugins' are available for Wordpress - plugins bring extra functions to your site and are quick and easy to install. One super-useful plugin for affiliate marketers automatically turns words into links. It is easy to create a list of affiliate links and words that you would like them associated to.

Wordpress is the adsense and
affiliate webmasters best friend!

Combining The Power Of Google Adsense And Email Marketing

In the past year, Google Adsense has become the “It” way to make money on the Internet.

But even if you already use Google Adsense on your site, you are probably leaving money on the table. Let me explain why…

Most people create a site, slap some content and then wait for people to click on their ads.

But once people click on an ad, they are gone….probably forever!

One method that smart Internet marketers use to maximize their Google Adsense is to harness the power of their email list. By getting people to subscribe to their list, website owners can continue to make money from their readers.

By utilizing the power of their email list, website owners can dramatically increase their Adsense income.

Here is how you can do the same. In the following article, there is a step-by-step list of how you can harness the power of your list to create a steady stream of Adsense revenue.

The first step is to create a topic that is in high demand. A good topic would be something that people have an interest in, or information that can help your readers personally or financially.

Your next action would be to create content for your site. The idea is to write or use information that would provide value to the reader. All your articles should help improve their life in some manner. You can create content for your site in a large numbers of ways. This can include:

· Your own web articles
· Guides, product evaluations, and “How To's”
· Blogs and RSS Feeds
· Public domain works
· Private label rights
· Hiring a freelancer to write your content

Obviously creating content for your site is an ongoing process, so once you've created at least 10 pages of quality information for your readers, you should create your web pages and optimize them for Google Adsense.

As you are designing your pages for Adsense, you should keep one thing in mind- Your primary goal is to get people to click on your Adsense ads.

So don't give your readers too many options. As a result, it is important to keep your web page simple. To do this, you should include do the following:

· Place the article on the web page
· Ad all three Adsense blocks in prominent places
· Make sure that the ad blocks look like standard text, with the no borders and blue links
· If you have to have other links on this page, include them at the bottom where there is a less chance of being clicked on

After designing your web pages, you need to create an autoresponder sequence for your email list. The primary focus for each email is to get people to click on your Google Adsense pages. So it is important to create and intriguing title. Then in the email, write a little bit about the importance of the article and tell your subscribers how they can learn more by clicking over to the site.

Once you've created your sequence of bringing readers to your Adsense pages, you should start promoting your lists. You can do this by articles, PPC, ebooks, viral marketing and SEO. The more people usually means more money, so you have to continuously work at marketing your website.

Once you have finished creating your Adsense and email system, you should go back and continue to add more content and market your site. By having a large selection of information and more readers, you'll discover that your Google Adsense income will grow exponentially.

Adsense Mistakes

All things below are available in TOS and Program Policies of Google, just summary:

1.Clicking ads on your site.

This is the biggest of all the adsense mistakes and an easiest way to get your account banned.

2. Editing adsense codes.

You are not allowed to edit the adsense codes you obtain from your adsense account. It is also advised to make the color changes etc from the adsense account itself instead of editing it from the codes. This is to avoid the possibility of mistakes.

3.Placing more ad units than allowed on a page.

Only 3 ad units, 1 link unit, 2 search tabs, 4 different referral buttons are allowed on a single page. It should always be made sure that all your pages are within the allowed list.

4. Using other contextual PPC ads together with google ads.

You are not allowed to display other contextual ads on a page which is showing google ads. Google ads, YPN ads etc are examples of contextual ads. Amazon ads are examples of non contextual ads. However there is a debate on whether amazon's omakase is contextual or not.It has been informed by adsense support that Amazon ads can be displayed on the same page with google ads.

5. Labeling ads with texts other than "sponsored links" or "advertisements".

Only the above mentioned two labels are allowed for google ads. I have seen that some publishers uses labels like "sponsors" "links" "links of interest" "click here for more info" etc. I can assure that these are against adsense TOS and can get your account banned.

6.Disclosing your adsense reports data to public.

You are not allowed to disclose anything other than your aggregate earnings to others. I have seen many people copying data from their reports and pasting with their questions on different forums. Everyone must know that this isn't allowed at all.

7.Placing direct download links for music or video on your adsense site.

According to adsense TOS, no link on your site should directly lead to audio or video result.

8.Too many entirely different topics on a single site.

This mistake won't get you banned but this can make it difficult for you to get relevant ads.

9. Not updating your site often enough.

This also won't get you banned but will affect your earnings and traffic. A site which is updated regularly will be getting a lot of return traffic and the ads will be changing from time to time thus the chances of same ads appearing for too long and people becoming not interested in clicking on the ads is reduced.

10. Not blending ads with your pages.

To get a good click through you should make ads look like a part of your site and not as an alien from mars.

11. Setting up the payment hold for too long.

Adsense is very strict about click fraud and they can ban any account if they detects fraud clicks.Once you are banned they won't pay you the money you earned before you was banned. So it is not a good practice to set up a payment hold for too long a time interval.

12. Not checking your adsense reports at least once a day.

If you don't check your reports regularly you won't know when something suspicious happens on your account. If you are checking it regularly you can write to adsense support whenever you find something suspicious and it can save your account from getting banned.

13.Not reading adsense TOS and Program Policies carefully.

14.Launching a New Page for clicked ads by default.

15.Creating more than one account.

16.Placing ads on pages with no content.

17.Masking ad elements.

18.Sending your ads by html formatted emails.

19.Referring people to visit search results page from your adsense search tab.

20.Placing ads on a site in unsupported language.

21.Specifying google ads as alternate ads.

22.Not adding spacers or boarders to seperate ads from images.

23.Getting into the clickgroups (There is reports that click groups are working from countries like Botswana,Syria,Pakistan etc who will clcik your if you pay a small amount to them.)

24.Placing your ads on sites created just to display ads.

25.Placing too many ads and keyword stuffing.

How to put Adsense on blog

Adding AdSense to your blog is easy. Go to the Template tab in Blogger and you'll see an "AdSense ads" tab below it:
If you don't have an AdSense account already, you can sign up for it right here within Blogger. Just enter a valid email address, choose a password, fill in some contact information (so you can get paid!) and then Blogger will register your account for you right away. If you do have an account already, just use the "sign in" link instead.

Once you've completed the sign-up form, or logged in to an existing account, you'll see a special preview version of your template, showing your blog as it will look with your new ads:

Using the menus above the preview, you can easily change the size, shape, and color of your ads, without ever needing to edit the code directly. The color menu has some preset color schemes, but also some flexible options that try to match, contrast, or blend with whatever template you happen to be using. Try them all out and see which setting works best.

Once you've decided how you'd like it to look, just save the changes and republish your blog. Then go check your email.

While you were deciding on layouts and colors, you probably received a confirmation email from AdSense. Find that email and click on the link it gives you to confirm your email address. Be sure to read the rest of the confirmation email as well, since it will contain other information on finishing the registration and approval process. Until your email address is confirmed and your AdSense application is approved, your ads will only show public service announcements (PSAs) rather than targeted ads. Since you don't get revenue from PSAs, you'll want to be sure to do this soon, so the AdSense bot can crawl your site and determine appropriate ads to show.
And now you're done! Congratulations -- you've got AdSense!

Notes:

  • There may be a bit of a delay before the AdSense bot gets to your site and you start getting targeted ads, though that should happen within 48 hours. Just be patient and it will get there in time.

  • This feature does not currently provide a way of moving the ads, though the default location used is one that tends to provide the best results. If you would like to move it elsewhere, such as to your sidebar, you will need to edit your template code directly. See How to put AdSense in your blog's sidebar for more details.

  • You can see how well your ads are doing by checking the 'Reports' tab on the AdSense website to look at your Ad performance. Keep in mind that reports appear an hour or so after a change has been made (and may sometimes be delayed up to 24 hours).

  • To change your payment information, or other account details after you've signed up you'll need to go to the main AdSense site and log in to your account there.

How Credit Cards Work

Have you ever stood behind someone in line at the store and watched him shuffle through a stack of what must be at least 10 credit cards? Consumers with this many cards are still in the minority, but experts say that the majority of U.S. citizens have at least one credit card -- and usually two or three. It's true that credit cards have become important sources of identification -- if you want to rent a car, for example, you really need a major credit card. And used wisely, a credit card can provide convenience and allow you to make purchases with nearly a month to pay for them before finance charges kick in.

That sounds good, in theory. But in reality, many consumers are unable to take advantage of these benefits because they carry a balance on their credit card from month to month, paying finance charges that can go up to a whopping 23 percent. Many find it hard to resist using the old "plastic" for impulse purchases or buying things they really can't afford. The numbers are striking: In 1999, American consumers charged about $1.2 trillion on their general-purpose credit cards.

In this article we'll look at the credit card -- how it works both financially and technically -- and we'll offer tips on how to shop for a credit card. (Experts say this should be a project on the scale of shopping for a car loan or mortgage!) We'll also describe the different credit-card plans available, talk about your credit history and how that might affect your card options, and discuss how to avoid credit-card fraud -- both online and in the real world.

Let's start at the beginning. A credit card is a thin plastic card, usually 3-1/8 inches by 2-1/8 inches in size, that contains identification information such as a signature or picture, and authorizes the person named on it to charge purchases or services to his account -- charges for which he will be billed periodically. Today, the information on the card is read by automated teller machines (ATMs), store readers, and bank and Internet computers.

According to Encyclopedia Britannica, the use of credit cards originated in the United States during the 1920s, when individual companies, such as hotel chains and oil companies, began issuing them to customers for purchases made at those businesses. This use increased significantly after World War II.

The first universal credit card -- one that could be used at a variety of stores and businesses -- was introduced by Diners Club, Inc., in 1950. With this system, the credit-card company charged cardholders an annual fee and billed them on a monthly or yearly basis. Another major universal card -- "Don't leave home without it!" -- was established in 1958 by the American Express company.

Later came the bank credit-card system. Under this plan, the bank credits the account of the merchant as sales slips are received (this means merchants are paid quickly -- something they love!) and assembles charges to be billed to the cardholder at the end of the billing period. The cardholder, in turn, pays the bank either the entire balance or in monthly installments with interest (sometimes called carrying charges).

The first national bank plan was BankAmericard, which was started on a statewide basis in 1959 by the Bank of America in California. This system was licensed in other states starting in 1966, and was renamed Visa in 1976.

Other major bank cards followed, including MasterCard, formerly Master Charge. In order to offer expanded services, such as meals and lodging, many smaller banks that earlier offered credit cards on a local or regional basis formed relationships with large national or international banks.

7 Ways to Get Rid of Cold Sores

Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus, which is believed to lie dormant in certain nerve cells of the body until it is activated by stress, anxiety, a cold, or excessive exposure to the sun. The sores last anywhere from 7 to 14 days.
Although some use the terms "cold sore" and "canker sore" interchangeably, they are different. Unlike cold sores, canker sores are bacterial infections inside the mouth that are characterized by small, round, white areas surrounded by a sharp halo of red. And, while cold sores are highly contagious, canker sores are not.

Unfortunately, attempting to camouflage a cold sore with makeup often aggravates the problem. Still, while you can't do much about the way a cold sore looks, you can do a few things to help decrease discomfort, speed healing, and keep it from coming back. You can even take steps to prevent passing on your cold sore to others. Here's how:

1. Cover cold sores with a protective petroleum-based product. This will speed healing and help protect it from secondary infection with bacteria.

2. Reach for aspirin, acetaminophen, or ibuprofen. Cold sores can be quite painful. Over-the- counter painkillers can help.

3. Avoid salty or acidic foods. Foods such as potato chips or citrus fruits can further irritate cold sores and add to the pain.

4. Apply an over-the-counter anesthetic. A local anesthetic ointment containing benzocaine can help numb the pain temporarily.

5. Consult your health-care provider. If you have frequent or severe cold sores, see your doctor. In some cases, an antiviral medication called acyclovir can be prescribed.

6. Protect your lips from the sun. Applying sunscreen to your lips may help prevent sun-induced recurrences of cold sores. Look for a sunscreen designed especially for the lips that has an SPF of 15 or higher. Or, choose a lipstick that contains sunscreen.

7. Keep it to yourself. Cold sores are extremely contagious. Avoid kissing and sharing cups, towels, or other such items. Wash your hands frequently, especially after touching cold sores. And take care not to touch your eyes or genitals immediately after touching cold sores.

How Affiliate Programs Work

by Tom Harris

These days, it's remarkably easy to set up your own Web site.

If you have a computer connected to the Internet, you can simply go to a site such as GeoCities or AOL and use their ready-made Web design templates to construct a simple personal page.

These sites will give you a URL, store the content of your page and slap on some advertisements. Just like that, in an hour or two, your page is on the Web!

But what if you want to take your site to the next level? If you have a content-driven Web site, how can you make money off your traffic? If you are an online merchant, how can you get people to your site to buy your products? One popular option that serves both of these functions is an affiliate program. In this article, we'll examine affiliate programs to find out what they are, how they work, who they are for and how you can use them to benefit your Web site.

Java vs. JavaScript

Java is a programing language developed by Sun. Java allows programmers to create programs. One example is Java Applets, a small program embedded within a web page.
JavaScript is a scripting language developed by Netscape and later joined in a partnership with Sun. You can insert it directly to your HTML documents. Creating JavaScript is not difficult. What you need are only simple text editor and browser that supports JavaScript.
JavaScript
We are not going to show you how to write JavaScript here because useful JavaScripts are widely available for you to copy. You may not need to know how to write it unless you want customized Script for your site. If you want to learn how to write the script, try JavaScript for the world wide web book.
Shown below are some examples of useful JavaScripts and links to some JavaScript web sites

ALERT MESSAGE:

If you enter this page from the link on the main page, you will get an alert message. Try it again: Click here
Here is the code for the above message:

DYNAMIC IMAGES AND MENUS:

Dynamic menu can either be created by JavaScript or JavaApplet. The JavaScript version will work only on Netscape 3.0 or higher. JavaApplet version should work on both Netscape and Explorer but it will run much slower than JavaScript.
JavaScript example:

The principle is that you have two images. One will be displayed when you put your mouse on it, and the other will be displayed when the mouse is off the image.
Installation is easy. This code originally written by Nick Heinle and Athenia Associates. Follow the link to get detail instruction.

GIFs vs. JPEGs

As you may know, the most widely supported web image graphic formats are GIF and JPEG. This may add to you confusion--when should I use GIF and when should I use JPEG?

The easy rule to remember:

1. Use GIF format with graphics that you have created on your computer such as horizontal rules, buttons, or animation.

2. Use JPEG format when the images are scanned pictures or photographs.

GIF file can contain the maximum of 256 colors (8 bit) or less, which is good for customizing your graphic files. For example, if you create a GIF image of a red arrow, , you can customize the file to have only two colors, read and white. This means that the file is very very small because its palette contains only two colors. GIF file will yield a higher quality and smaller size image, compared to JPEG, when it is used with computer generated graphics such as icons, logos, buttons, etc.

JPEG was built to contain 24-bit (16.7+ million colors) and was developed specifically for photographic-style images. JPEG stores the information of images by keeping track of color changes. The advantage of JPEG is that it can carry a smaller file size than GIF when used in storing photographs and images with a wide variety of shading. But, it will not yield a smaller file when dealing with low color level and details like computer generated graphics.

GIFs also has some special features such as animation, transparency, and interlacing.

Animated GIFs

You can get GIF animation tools from many sources, I have listed them on Graphic Tools page, another page on this site.

Here are some sources for free GIF animation:

Anti-Phishing Accuracy Study

As we’ve worked on the new Phishing Filter in IE7, we knew the key measure would be how effective it is in protecting customers. In addition to our internal tests, we wanted to find some external measure of our progress to date as well as pointing to ways we could improve. We didn’t know of a publicly available study covering the area, only some internal and media product reviews. (We’ve blogged a few times about the new Phishing Filter in IE7; in addition to these technical details we published the results of a 3rd party privacy audit.)

To help us answer this question, we asked 3 Sharp LLC to conduct a study of the Phishing Filter in IE7 along with seven other products designed to protect against phishing threats. In order to establish an accurate methodology on a level field, they utilized four sources of independent data that are not used to populate the IE7 Phishing Filter service today. They worked hard to build large enough sample sizes of actual phishing sites to draw meaningful conclusions.

3Sharp LLC tested eight browser-based products to evaluate their overall accuracy in catching 100 live confirmed phishing websites over a six week period (May – July 2006) and also understand the false-positive error rate on 500 good sites. In addition to IE7, the toolbar and browser solutions tested included the offerings from EarthLink, eBay, GeoTrust, Google Safe Browsing using Firefox, McAfee SiteAdvisor, Netcraft, and Netscape. You can see actual version numbers in the detailed report.

We are pleased to see that Internet Explorer 7’s Phishing Filter finished at the top of 3Sharp’s list as most accurate anti-phishing technology, catching nearly 9 out of 10 phishing sites while generating no warning or block errors on the 500 legitimate websites tested. You can read the report for yourself at 3Sharp’s website. The report contains details on the methodology, the data sources used and even a list of every single URL tested.

It’s great to see so many companies looking for different ways to address the significant problem of phishing. We think that the results reported by 3Sharp validate the unique approach we’ve taken of combining a service-backed block list with client-side heuristics. That said, we understand that the threat posed by phishing is constantly evolving as are the tools designed to protect users, so this set of results represents only the relative performance during that period. We know we need to keep working to keep up with the changes in the attacks and are already using the results of this test to further improve the efficacy of the Phishing Filter.

If you’re using IE7 but not already using the Phishing Filter, I encourage you to turn it on (you can find it under the Tools icon) and browse with more confidence. If you’re not using IE7 yet, you can install our latest version here:

More Men Die From Heat-Related Deaths

By JOANNA SCHAFFHAUSEN
July 28, 2006

MEN MORE LIKELY TO DIE FROM HEAT The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a review of heat-related deaths in the United States from 1999 to 2003, finding that an average of 688 people die from heat-related illnesses each year. Men are much more likely to die from the heat than women — for every three heat deaths, two are male. Many people who died also had underlying heart disease. States with the highest death rates were Arizona, Nevada and Missouri.

MEN HAVE HIGHER CLOT RISK? A review of 15 studies published in Lancet this week suggests that men are more likely than women to suffer a second blood clot after a first episode. Australian researchers included information on more than 5,400 patients in their analysis. Overall, risk of a second blood clot is high, about a one in four chance of suffering a second clot over a five-year period. Of the people who suffered a second clot, 64 percent were men and 36 percent were women.

WATCHING TV TAKES AWAY FROM EXERCISE? Harvard School of Public Health researchers examining people living predominantly in low-income/minority-group housing found that TV watching appeared to reduce a person's amount of exercise. For each additional hour a person spent in front of the TV, he or she walked an average of 144 fewer steps during the day. Also, researchers are always quick to blame TV or video games, but other studies show that people who like watching TV will just find other ways to sit around if the TV is off, such as reading, board games and crafts. Turning off the TV to get exercise only works if you go exercise. These findings were published this week in the American Journal of Public Health.

Anger a Threat to the Heart

By JOANNA SCHAFFHAUSEN

Nov. 13, 2006 — ANGER MAY TRIGGER DANGEROUS HEART RHYTHMS Anger may trigger life-threatening rhythm disturbances in the heart, researchers find in a new study of over a thousand patients. Doctors studied the relationship between emotions and heart rhythms in a group of people with heart disease who had special devices implanted near their hearts. The devices, called implantable cardioverter defibrillators, or ICDs, monitor heart rhythms and deliver a shock when necessary to correct any potentially fatal disturbances. Researchers studied 200 patients whose ICDs had delivered a shock. The results showed that people were more than three times as likely to have a rhythm disturbance after they had become at least moderately angry and more than 16 times as likely to get a shock after they had become furious. Heart specialists say this underscores the importance of counseling patients who have had cardiac health problems to try to reduce stress in their lives. These findings were presented at the 2006 American Heart Association meeting in Chicago.

DANCE YOUR WAY TO A HEALTHIER HEART Dancing improves the ability to function and increases the quality of life among chronic heart failure patients, and may be a good alternative to other aerobic exercises, according to new research presented this weekend at the 2006 American Heart Association meeting in Chicago. The study, conducted on 110 patients in Italy, found that dancing, especially waltzing, induced the same physiological benefits as standard aerobic activity. The dancers also reported an improved quality of life compared to those that engaged in traditional exercise.

AFRICAN AMERICANS HAVE HIGHER DEATH RATE FROM HEART DISEASE Heart disease takes a higher toll on African-American patients with heart disease than it does white patients, Duke University researchers find in a study of more than 20,000 people presented at the 2006 American Heart Association meeting in Chicago. Among patients with serious heart disease who were followed for an average of nine years, blacks had a 36 percent survival rate compared to a 46 percent survival rate for whites. Researchers say the difference is partly due to the fact that blacks more often have other medical conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure, which can contribute to heart disease.

Washington creates beer commission

The Associated Press/YAKIMA, Wash.
By SHANNON DININNY
Associated Press Writer

NOV. 15 12:30 P.M. ET In Washington state, where the brewpub craze was launched two decades ago, craft brewers have created a new state-sanctioned commission to better market their ales to consumers.

The group will represent licensed breweries that produce less than 100,000 barrels annually per location. With 84 microbreweries, Washington trails just California and Colorado.

The commission may be the first state-sanctioned promotional group for craft brewers, according to Paul Gatza, director of the Brewers Association in Boulder, Colo. The group counts 905 craft breweries as members, producing seven million barrels of beer in 2005.

"That it's part of the state government system, that it's recognized as a pretty important agricultural product to the state, makes it exciting," he said. "When you're dealing with an alcoholic beverage industry, it's hard to get the state to get anywhere near it except to regulate it. But to promote the quality of the state's beers is just a wonderful direction."
Beer is big business in the Pacific Northwest. In the early 1980s, the late beer pioneer Bert Grant laid claim to what was believed to be the first American brewpub since Prohibition in central Washington's agricultural Yakima Valley.

Three-fourths of the nation's hops -- providing much of the flavor and aroma of beers and ales -- also come from Yakima Valley.

Sales of craft beers continue to escalate. For the first six months of 2006, microbreweries saw increased sales of 11 percent nationally, Gatza said.

"It's going to be a banner year," he said. "What's even more interesting in Washington, because there is so much strength of the industry there, even though some of them are very small, is that this should get a pretty nice pool of resources to market with."

The Washington commission will collect a 10-cent per barrel assessment on a maximum of 10,000 barrels per brewer, as well as revenue from commission-sponsored festivals, to pay for promotional activities.

State lawmakers approved the commission during the last legislative session. Valoria Loveland, director of the state Department of Agriculture, announced its inaugural members Monday.

"Most people are working at capacity or near capacity to try to keep up with demand, which is great. I love it," said newly appointed commissioner Jeff Smiley of Baron Brewing Co. in Seattle, which produces Germany-style beers. "It's the perfect time to be getting out and talking about our products."

Members are hoping to replicate the success of the Washington Wine Commission, which promotes Washington wines domestically and internationally. Washington is the nation's second-leading producer or premium wine behind California.

"Some of the best beers in America are made in Washington state, and like Washington wine was 10, 20 years ago, really not recognized around the nation, we hope to change that," said George Hancock, commission member and founder of Pyramid Breweries Inc. "For the most part, those guys are small businesses too, and are a great model for beer and small brewers."

First order of business, though, will be to promote Washington beers to Washington consumers, Hancock said. He estimated as much as 99 percent of all beer consumed in Washington is brewed outside the state, despite tremendous growth in production among the state's breweries.

Anacortes Brewery, which opened in 1994, has experienced up to 12 percent growth each year since 2000. The brewery makes 30 beers and buys most of its ingredients from Washington farmers.

"All of our employees come from the state of Washington, our ingredients come from the state of Washington, and most of our product is sold within the state of Washington," said Allen Rhoades, president and brewer. "We all have good products to sell, and we want to get out there and let people know that."

The Winners: Best Entrepreneurs Under 25

Meet the entrepreneurs behind this year's five winning U.S. businesses, as selected by BusinessWeek.com readers
by Nick Leiber

Back in August, we kicked off our second annual search for the most promising businesses started by young people in the U.S., asking readers to nominate their favorite candidates, ages 25 and under.

We were searching for the kinds of startup success stories that could only be conceived by fearless, smart entrepreneurs. We also wanted to chronicle a trend: entrepreneurs skewing younger and younger, motivated by high-profile examples like Google's (GOOG) agreement to buy YouTube for $1.65 billion, thousands of courses and resources offered by colleges and universities and nonprofits nationwide, and peers' and parents' recognition that entrepreneurship is indeed a viable career path.

More than 300 people nominated their best bets, which BusinessWeek.com editors narrowed down to 25 impressive finalists. Each had established businesses with potential and determined ways to operate on a shoestring, forgoing traditional advertising, taking advantage of telecommuting, even offshoring. Their profiles were posted in the Best Entrepreneurs Under 25 Special Report at the end of October (see BusinessWeek.com, 10/30/06, "Young, Fearless, and Smart").

Range of Businesses

Readers voted online for their favorites through mid-November. When the dust settled, almost 50,000 votes had been cast.

The winners' businesses ranged from in-game advertising to credit-card processing to custom jewelry retailing. All of them had found a way to improve an existing service or create a new one, building a strong Web presence, harnessing inexpensive technology, and staying focused on creating a clear revenue stream and a scalable business model.

Congratulations to all.

Japan's Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning after an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 8.1 hit the Kuril islands north of Japan Wednesday night, Nov. 15, 2006. (AP Photo/File)

TOKYO Nov 15, 2006 (AP)— Japan's meteorological agency issued a tsunami warning and told the country's Pacific coast residents to flee to higher ground after a powerful earthquake hit hundreds of miles away.

A tsunami about 6 1/2 feet tall or higher was expected to hit the Pacific coast of Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido and main island of Honshu after 9:10 p.m. (7:10 a.m. EST), the agency said.

An official from the town of Shibetsu on Hokkaido, Kiyoshi Takimoto, told public broadcaster NHK that about 4,000 of the town's 6,100 residents lived along the coast and had been told to flee to higher ground.

Takimoto said he didn't notice the quake. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, according to NHK.

A tsunami advisory was issued for Hawaii, where the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat of a destructive wave.

Cindy Preller, an official with the Alaska Tsunami Warning Center, said no tsunami was expected to hit the West Coast of North or South America. She said there was a slight chance one could hit the western Aleutian Islands.

The quake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.1 struck about 245 miles east of the Etorofu islands, which are about 990 miles northeast of Tokyo, at 6:15 a.m. EST, according to the Japanese meteorological agency.

A Russian official said a powerful earthquake had struck the Kuril Islands area and there was no immediate word of damage or casualties.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported on its Web site that a 7.8-magnitude quake had been detected 275 miles east-northeast of the Kurils at a depth of 17.2 miles. Temblors of magnitude 7 are generally classified as major earthquakes, capable of widespread, heavy damage.

Bush Vietnam Trip Revives Iraq 'Quagmire'

Bush's Trip to Vietnam Revives 'Quagmire' Comparison That Has Haunted President's Iraq Policy
By JENNIFER LOVEN

WASHINGTON Nov 15, 2006 (AP)— President Bush's recent acknowledgment that the war in Iraq was comparable to the Viet Cong's psychologically devastating Tet Offensive in 1968 was hardly the first time a parallel has been drawn between the Iraq and Vietnam conflicts.

Questions about a "quagmire" have haunted the president's Iraq policy since before a single bomb fell on Baghdad.

But this week, amid an intensifying discussion at home about the future of the war, Bush gives the comparison debate another kick by walking among Vietnam War relics on a four-day visit to the communist nation created after American troops departed 33 years ago.

The president left the White House on Tuesday night, planning to stop briefly in Moscow and then in Singapore before arriving in Hanoi on Friday for a state visit and a massive summit of Pacific Rim leaders. He also spends a day in Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon.

As the summit host, Vietnam is focused on what will be a coming-out party for its ascendant economy, preferring to look ahead rather than back. Bush, too, is emphasizing economic reforms in Vietnam, and its steadily improving cooperation on trade and issues like AIDS and bird flu.

But there will be no mistaking the reminders of the country's wartime past and the U.S. military's troubled history there.

Envoy: Vietnam to get normal trade ties

Vietnam became 150th member of WTO ^^ HELLO WORLD!

NOV. 15 4:33 A.M. ET The failure of the U.S. Congress to pass legislation fully normalizing trade relations with Vietnam is only a temporary setback, the top U.S. trade negotiator said Wednesday, expressing confidence the bill will pass next month.

Approval of the trade bill granting what is known as "permanent normal trade relations," or PNTR, is required for U.S. businesses to take full advantage of Vietnam's entry into the World Trade Organization, which is expected to occur next month.

"We are confident that PNTR will be enacted in the U.S. and we will continue to press very hard to see that PNTR takes place before Vietnam joins the WTO," U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab said.

Vietnam views the trade bill as a final, important symbolic step in reconciliation between the two former foes.
Schwab, speaking to reporters on the sideline of a meeting of Pacific Rim economic ministers, noted that Monday's vote on the bill was 228-161 -- 32 short of the two-thirds margin required for approval -- and said it was certain to pass when it is resubmitted for consideration next month.

"We are confident that PNTR will be passed for Vietnam," she said. "PNTR is just a matter of time."

Internet2 is higher-tech version of regular Internet

More than 400 college students are being sued for allegedly swapping pirated music files over a super-fast computer network called Internet2. The Recording Industry Association of America, the music industry trade group behind the lawsuits, claims that the students have "hijacked" Internet2 and turned it into a tool for massive music piracy. (Related: College students face lawsuits) But few people have heard of Internet2. USA TODAY reporter Michelle Kessler explains this other Internet.

What is Internet2?

Think of Internet2 as a higher-tech version of the regular Internet. Like "Internet1," Internet2 connects computers all across the country. But it uses newer, more experimental technology. That can make it less stable than Internet1 — but it's also about 100 times as fast under typical conditions.

Who gets to use it?

More than 200 universities and 60 companies belong to Internet2, as do a handful of organizations and government agencies. To join, members must contribute research toward "developing a better Internet," says Douglas Van Houweling, CEO of the non-profit group that runs Internet2. It is not open to the public.

Who pays for it?

Users pay fees to the non-profit that administers the network. A typical university would pay about $200,000 a year. Government agencies, such as the National Science Foundation, also provide some funding.

Is it connected to the regular Internet?

No, it's a separate network. Internet2 users can only contact other Internet2 users. That's why all the accused file-swappers are college students.

The original Internet works fine. Why is Internet2 needed?

In 1969, the University of California at Los Angeles and Stanford University set up a simple computer network that could send data back and forth between the two campuses. For more than 20 years, academics tinkered with this network and its successors. They used the networks to test computer technology and send research data.

In the early 1990s, commercial interest in one of the successor networks, now called the Internet, soared. Web pages popped up, and suddenly it became impractical to tinker with the network for research projects. Scientists wanted their own network again, and in 1996, created Internet2.

What kind of work is done on Internet2?

Research, mostly. At the University of Missouri-Rolla, nuclear engineers use it to send high-quality video links to labs at other universities. At the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), biomedical researchers use it to access giant genetic databases. At Wichita State University, mathematicians use it to tap into distant supercomputers. "It's been a great resource," says Wichita computing director Gary Ott. Companies such as Cisco Systems and IBM also use Internet2 to test networking technologies.

How do you use Internet2?

At many schools, Internet2 is combined with Internet1 behind the scenes. A student sending e-mail will have all her messages travel across Internet1, until she e-mails a student at another Internet2 university. That message travels over Internet2. "It's transparent to users," says David Shealy, academic computing director at UAB.

Will Internet2 ever be open to the public?

Probably not. But the technologies developed in Internet2 will gradually be transferred to the original Internet, making it faster and more stable. The goal is to "create the next-generation Internet," says network director Brian Buege of the University of Missouri-Rolla.

College students face lawsuits on file sharing

By Jefferson Graham, USA TODAY

WASHINGTON — The major record labels, in an ongoing battle about digital music piracy, on Tuesday announced plans to sue college students who use a super-high-speed campus network to share songs.
The Recording Industry Association of America will file copyright infringement lawsuits against 405 students at 18 schools today. Separately, the Motion Picture Association of America plans to file an unspecified number of lawsuits targeting students at seven campuses, including Princeton, Columbia University, Ohio State and the University of California-San Diego.

The universities are part of the Internet2 network, a consortium of 200 schools, government agencies and corporations that use it for collaborative research.

RIAA President Cary Sherman says Internet2 has been "hijacked" by students for more than just education. Many are sharing copyrighted files, he says — the equivalent of 175 CDs worth on average.

The recording companies have filed more than 9,000 lawsuits against song swappers since September 2003, mostly against users of file-sharing programs such as Kazaa, Morpheus and Grokster.

A new media swap network, i2hub, has become a popular way for students to tap into the Internet2 network and download songs, movies and games at lightning-fast speed.

"The i2hub (was) for some reason thought to be a safe zone, and what we wanted to do was puncture that misconception," Sherman says.

I2Hub advertises itself as the "largest student community in the world, with hundreds of thousands of users."

Founder Wayne Chang said in a statement that i2Hub "does not condone activities and actions that breach the rights of copyright owners."

The music industry has been trying to recover from a protracted sales decline. While sales bounced back minimally, 2%, in 2004, Sherman says, they're down 8% to 9% this year.

Internet2 CEO Douglas Van Houweling says he isn't surprised that students are sharing songs on the ad hoc network, but that it does not engage in enforcement activities.

"The industry and the universities need to deal with it," he said.

Internet2 says it connects schools at a rate 20,000 times faster than the average broadband connection. "Our focus is on creating the Internet of the future," says Van Houweling.

Since the RIAA lawsuits began, file-sharing has become more widespread. In March, about 8.5 million people were logged into peer-to-peer (P2P) networks at any one time. That compares with the 6.8 million logged into P2P networks in June 2003, when the RIAA first announced its intention to file lawsuits.

Phil Leigh, an analyst for Inside Digital Media, predicts the new legal onslaught against students will scare them — at first. "Then they'll find another way to circumvent the system. Students will see it as a challenge," he says.

Silicon Insider: A Billion Bloggers?

The Growth of the Blogosphere Has Defied Expectation, and It's Not Even Close to Peaking
By MICHAEL S. MALONE

Nov. 9, 2006 — If you can believe it, there are 57 million blogs out there.

Four times each year, Technorati, the blog search engine, produces what it calls its "State of the Blogosphere" report.

Technorati has been putting out these reports for several years now, and every one has been a mind-boggler. Indeed, to my mind, it is the single most important index of the sheer cultural power of the Internet in our time.

Think about that: Every single day, 100,000 people out there in the world download the proper software and begin keeping a record of their lives, spouting their opinions, posting photographs of their pets, listing their favorite new movie or book or song, telling their secret dreams and fears, publishing their poetry, writing paeans to their heroes, memorializing lost parents and friends, and on and on.
A total of 1.3 million posts per day.

I once called this the Great Conversation of our time, but I was mistaken … or more likely, premature.

Because so few of these millions of bloggers ever hear more than an occasional reply back to their missives, these are really tens of millions of monologues, shouted out into cyberspace, in hopes of even the tiniest echo.

There is something very poignant, but also quite magnificent, about all of this.

It is the heroic individual still trying to make himself or herself heard above the cacophony of modern life.
